DON’T MISS THE JANUARY 15TH TRY-IT DAY AND THE 8-WEEK SQUASH PROGRAM STARTING ON JANUARY 29TH!

In 2017, one in five (22%) of the Canadian population aged 15 years and over – or about 6.2 million individuals – had one or more disabilities. The prevalence of disability increased with age, from 13% for those aged 15 to 24 years to 47% for those aged 75 years and over.

In 2019, a squash club Newfoundland launched a highly successful program called the Canadian Inclusivity Squash Program for athletes with a mental, emotional, or physical disability, the first official inclusive squash program of its kind in North America. Squash Ontario will aim to duplicate this model with the support of the Jumpstart Relief Fund in 2022.

The Ontario chapter of CISP is launching in Toronto in January 2022. This will be the first step in building the squash athlete pathway for athletes with disabilities in Ontario and an important piece of the national initiative.

The game of squash has been modified so it can now be taught to and enjoyed by persons with an intellectual, mental or emotional disability (i.e. Down’s Syndrome, Autism, ADHD, etc.) in a fully inclusive and safe environment. Participating in squash can increase one’s ability to learn, social skills, balance, coordination and fitness and most importantly self worth. Participants will complete session feedback forms to ensure the program is being beneficial and enjoyable. All feedback forms will be analyzed to determine positive changes to continuously enhance the program and the participants enjoyment.

FREE Try-It Days are offered where participants can first try the sport for before signing up for the program. The Try-It Days will be followed by an 8-week program which will take participants through all of the introductory squash shots with lessons from the coach, drill opportunities, followed by fun games.
