St. Jude's Academy Students Hit the Squash Courts and Reap the Social and Physical Benefits!

Twelve students in Grades 7 through 12 at St. Jude’s Academy, an IB continuum school, in Mississauga, were given the opportunity to give the sport of squash a try.  A few have had experience playing squash before, but for most it is the first time trying the sport. Thanks to the help from Meadowvale Community Centre’s fitness supervisor, Carol Mio, the students were given the opportunity to use the beautiful squash courts at the Meadowvale Community Centre.

The idea to start a squash club came from one of their teachers, Marijana Haag, who in recent years has been playing in community squash tournaments published through Squash Ontario’s newsletters. One of Marijana’s regrets is that she did not start playing squash and in tournaments when she was younger. She hopes to introduce students at St. Jude’s Academy to the joys of squash and the fun of socializing with other players.

The spots in the trial squash club filled up quickly. Students’ time on the courts have focused on the basics – warm up exercises, the correct grip, drives, volleys, footwork and serves. The students have enjoyed their time on the courts. The social benefits are already evident as students who would not necessarily interact at school are getting to know each other on the courts. Those new to squash are surprised at how good a workout it is playing squash. The group plans to finish off their season by playing a mini tournament amongst themselves. Everyone is going to try their best to win. Hopefully their interest in squash continues and they get to play with other high schools in Ontario in 2023 – 2024.
