Mayfair Lakeshore and Head Professional Manu Dutt played host to the 2023 YouFirst Financial Ontario Open Championships this past weekend. Courts were taken over by 120 of Ontario’s top players who competed for a provincial title in 14 different divisions.
The Men’s and Women’s Open divisions were both PSA Satellite events with a combined prize pot of $5,000, which attracted many out of province players, especially in the Men’s draw. Our Jesters University League was well represented on the podium with University of Waterloo’s Niki Shemirani dominating the women’s division, only dropping one game in the final against Queen’s Marlow Benson. Khaaliqa Nimji, also of the Waterloo women’s team, placed third. On the men’s side, Egypt’s Abdelrahman Nassar was crowned champion without dropping a single game along the way. Amaad Fareed of Pakistan was our finalist and local talent Salah Eltorgman placed third.
Squash Ontario was pleased to see our community come together for our final senior provincial championship of the season, surpassing our pre-COVID entry numbers for this event. We can’t thank our title sponsor YouFirst Financial (Simon Chun) enough for supporting this event, ensuring players received a quality player package. A special thank you to tournament official Sofia Navadeh and our team of certified referees for providing quality officiating and monitoring on court behaviour throughout the weekend. Josh Ginou of SquashStream provided the streaming of both show courts throughout the whole weekend so spectators could tune in remotely, while also playing in the tournament.
Thank you to all those who participated and supported this event!
