Ontario Winter Games Comes to a Close and Team Ontario heads to PEI for Canada Winter Games!

Although we are used to competing as individuals in squash, the last 5 weeks has seen an unprecedented amount of team events. Starting 2023 off with the Canadian Men’s & Women’s Teams in Regina, followed by the Canadian Masters Teams in PEI, it’s now the juniors turn to switch it up!

This past weekend in Petawawa, six regions faced off at the 2023 Renfrew County Ontario Winter Games. With support from Renfrew County and the Ministry of Sport, our athletes were treated to a mini Olympics experience, where they played, stayed and ate together throughout the four days, alongside other sports in the Games. Each team, comprised of a boys and girls under 13, 15, 17 and 19 player, participated in a round robin draw format over the 3 competition days, playing five rounds of matches.

Team GTA Northwest coached by Cory McCartney took home the gold medal, with Team GTA East led by Maria Toorpakai Wazir placing second (losing to the winners by a handful of points). Rounding out the top three was Team Western, coached by Joanna Phang and Johnny Wilson. A special thank you to all the players, coaches and managers who took time to participate in this awesome event! For full results, CLICK HERE.

Next up for Team Ontario? The 2023 Canada Winter Games in Charlottetown, PEI, an event that takes place every four years. Our team of ten is making their way east later today for 9 days with squash competition beginning Sunday. Our boys and girls will be competing in a team event and four players will represent Team O in an individual draw.

Going into the Games, Team Ontario girls are seeded second in the team event, with the boys expected to finish third. Regardless of the seeding, coaches Marci Sier and Robin Clarke are looking to lead Team O to victory! Ontario is looking to replicate an extremely successful 2019 games which saw both our teams bring home the Gold, as well as individual men’s gold and silver medals and women’s silver and bronze medals.

Best of luck to our team of all stars and be sure to turn into CBC Tuesday, February 21 to catch the Squash individual finals! Follow our social media as we update you throughout the week.
