Unfortunately though, given the present high mastering & replicating costs of Blu-Ray discs, the price for it will higher than that of standard DVDs. Not the best of situation but one that will that will undoubtedly change over time. The good news is when that happens, and if the demand justifies it naturally, we may re-release the best matches from the Pace 07 onwards since all our TV productions in & outside squash are only in HD.
• Including the Women’s matches, only the best 12 from the 20 we filmed made the best DVDs’ cut. In short all DVDs would provide you a total of 11 hours + of the greatest squash with 6 matches going the 3-2 limit & 4 to close 4s.

First Super Series event of the 2008 season, back from well deserved Holidays Season rest following a busy year end schedule, all players were right back where they left off in 07, sharp, precise and eager to make their mark in one of the world’s most prestigious event, the iconic Tournament of Champions. A list of the games’ elite winners of the ToC event over past decades hung on a giant banner in the middle of Grand Central Station & where the event took place, the hundred thousand + New York commuters and the spectators walking through the station every day could hardly miss it. What a motivator this banner must have been for each of the players attending the event… From the way they let it out on court throughout the week, it was clear to the spectators lucky enough to attend ToC 08 that those weren’t ordinary matches, they were for the history book. As the players looked up at the banner passing by the famous clock on the way to the court, all had a common dream, that of seeing their name added to the famous banner by final’s day….  Of course only one made but all those present who witnessed their effort to reach that dream were treated to the best show on earth.

Samples from each match will be displayed shortly next to their descriptions. The men’s DVDs are listed in their usual order, that is from the best of the lot @ # 1 to # 10. The 2 women’s matches are not ranked amongst those but they are amazingly good as they were both closely contested all the way to their 3-2 conclusion.

Please note that in making our selection of the events’ best matches, we left out other great ones on the editing tables; as a result and for that very reason we can assure you that the majority, if not all of them, could have been selected amongst the top 3. If you prefer watching the matches/DVDs in the order of the rounds they were played as opposed to that of our selected ranking order, things will be easier for you from now on as we will indicate what round each match is from on the insert & dvd artworks. If you have any suggestions and ideas on how we could improve our productions, please don’t hesitate to let us know, then be assured that we’ll do all that we can to implement them in the future.

1. Ramy Ashour vs. ElHindi

This was Ramy’s first real test since returning to competition following the injury he suffered to his foot in the later part of 07; he was evidently cautious and not sure if he should or could push off his strapped foot. The match was highly physical and emotionally charged. Wael stood his grounds and seemed un-phased by the moment and the crowd gasping at every one of Ramy’s unforced errors. In no time he fell behind in the score and his brother Hisham, who was our commentator for the match, was sharing his pain desperately attempting to will Ramy back in the match from behind the microphone and his monitor.

One to watch and to listen to, it is also one to experience for so many reasons difficult to explain, but one amongst them we know is of relief – the scare is over, Ramy is back!

2. Gaultier vs. White, featuring “The Rally”

Every one of us who plays this game has, at one time or another, been on the receiving end of a ‘court touring’ sequence during which opponents sent us running balls down to all corners of the court over and over. They made sure we saw stars and unable to ‘think’ while we they kept us ‘busy’ running & gasping for air just to stay alive. Naturally right off the top you may have guessed already that one of those rallies took place in this match, well it kind of did... but with 3 times the amount of running, twisting and lunging any normal human being can possibly be subjected to in the same rally. Through his efforts in that rally as well throughout the roller-coaster match that went the limit, and as well in reward for an illustrious career throughout which he entertained and dazzled us, we elected to create this match in Blu-Ray HD, the first ever in the sport. Wishful thinking maybe, let’s hope John will put off retirement for another 10 years, by then his children will be ready to take over.

3. Palmer vs. Abbas

Tour leading tactician Palmer Vs Abbas the fearless artist, in a chess match of sort of grand masters’ level.  It will become evident to you while watching this dvd that Abbas is closing the gap with the top players, in fact don’t be surprise to see him join the best 5 in the next few months. His racquet skills are second to none; the balls he strikes from any heights and positions on court find nicks with ease.

Palmer isn’t as naturally gifted but he certainly makes up for it through plain hard work, amazing volley drops and disguised boasts he unleashes when they are least expected. Furthermore, as tour players who faced David know all too well by now, they can’t count on him to show emotions they could feed on to restore their confidence, one thing not so easy for Abbas to do for now but he’s learning fast & from the best. David met Mo, Mo met roc, one solid match of epic proportion.

4. White vs. Kemp

Our first match ever featuring Jonathan, a great entry at #4, what a dizzying performance he gave, literally! After all ‘Powerhouse’ Whity was at the batting end. We have been filming John for many years now and time and again we’ve seen him toss & turn the best of the best, rarely, if ever though, have we seen him in such devastating form.

To Jonathan credit, we must say that he took the beating much like a sponge takes in liquid, he sucked it up and toughed it out picking up all that he could until the tides turned… Through a healthy mix of attacks and defensive play he inched his way back in the match forcing it to a deciding 5th, much to the appreciation of the NY crowd who on this night had traded their Broadway show for that of GCT. Good choice.

5. Ramy vs. Palmer

Ramy had barely survived a huge deficit in the previous day’s battle Vs one of his countryman, things had to be different today Vs ‘King’ David, one of the tour’s fittest & most consistent player, or he may be pushing his foot beyond what it could safely withstand given his recent absence from the tour from an injury to that foot. Impetuous youth prevailing though, he relegated that little problem to the back of his mind to focus on the job at hand. After all he was playing to a packed house next to Broadway NY , and as the saying goes, no matter what ‘the show must go on’. And so it did from the first seconds with a flurry of volleys off the young man’s racquet that sent balls peppering nicks sharp-shooting style, what foot injury? Who needs it?

Palmer had blinked, he was now trailing 0-4, but he wasn’t done just yet, no sir he, not a former world champions who had seen it all, and survived all the way to the podium time and again. Drawing on his vast experience he inched his way back into the match giving the young phenomenon a run for his money. David’s friend Anthony Ricketts, who recently retired from the game due to chronic knee injury, joined us at the microphone for this match all the while coaching David between games. We thanks to him for providing us great insights for this classic match that, thanks in part to him, will surely be one for the archives. Farewell Anthony.

6. J. Illinworth vs. O. Tuominen

Julien may have been ranked 44th in the world at the time of this event but he played at a level of at least 30 positions above it. As one of America ’s own was he ready to make his mark on the world squash scene? Would he overcome the pressures of the moment and do what no American ever did before him by beating a professional ranked in the teens? Julien certainly has undeniable assets that could be a definite threat to any touring pros; he is a great mover and a solid tactician, and he proved it throughout the match. Noticing that Olli was struggling to deal with balls he played to the backhand side, it is exactly where he concentrated the majority of his attacks early in the match.

But Olli is one of the fittest players on the circuit, so he forced the young man into playing his style of game hitting all the balls he could hit up & down the court daring him to run them down... Then three games into the match, and having fallen behind in the score by a considerable margin, Olli’s plan appeared to have succeeded… Julien seemed evidently distraught and ready to drop the towel and surrender. We all thought he was done but it wasn’t the case; he later told us that blisters had flared up under his feet during that running sequence, so once he treated them between games and managed to block the pain off, he continued where he had started. Olli was ready though, or was he? One point, then another, the crowd was going wild, it had to have been the loudest ever in Grand Central, they were willing Julien forward and he refused to disappoint them…  One great match to watch and experience, beware though, you may have to lower the volume towards its conclusion.

7. H. Ashour vs. T. Momen

Hisham is in familiar territory when it comes to defending his position as senior to kids 5 years younger than he is, but he’s beaten some of the best including Matthew, White & Iskandar in recent times so he’d have to draw on those experiences and all his offensive weaponry to fend off a fine new competitor on the squash scene.

Seeing Tarek for the first time you’d think he’s barely 15, but in fact he’s 19 and not really counting. But for a few moments, you couldn’t tell the young man is still in his teens, his game is solid and mature; his shot selection is dead on most times as are his drop shots. The rallies were in majority made of short but incisive attacks, and although the match went the limit it was relatively compact. Long gone are 2-3 minute rallies, attention spans aren’t what they use to be.  These 2 players and the likes of Amr, Ramy, James and so many others lead the way to a new era for the sport, one that may very well help its popularity at large and lead it to the Olympics…

8. Willstrop vs. Boswell

Stewart is one of the rare bread of players these days whose game is based on attrition and long drawn out rally. Having joined the tour 13 year ago it was the norm then, Jansher Khan was the game’s top gun and the one many players modeled their game after including Stewart. For those of you who didn’t see Jansher in action or don’t recall, his trademark game was to wear his opponent down by drawing them in the longest possible rallies then, once they had run out of options and legs, he fed off the mistakes they made as they went for the low percentage winners that would end their misery. Great champions before and after him such as Geoff Hunt, Jahangir Khan and Peter Nicol had much success with that style of play, so who better to emulate as junior when you build your game and aspired to be #1?

James however is younger and of a different breed of players who rely more heavily on wits and creativity to win rallies, he is in a way what Qamar Zaman was to Geoff Hunt, what Brett & Rodney Martin were to Jansher and what Jonathon Power was to Peter Nicol, maybe not as dominating in terms of holding the top ranking position for long periods, but providing the much needed balance and excitement that possibly inspired today’s young stars.  Relive through this match some of those historical rivalries.

9. Ashour vs. Willstrop (Free with purcahse of Best 6 or Best 8 DVDs)

How is it that playing perfect squash isn’t enough to win a match anymore? Shot for shot both players were at par, both were equally patient waiting for opportunities and swift in their attacks. If we had to summarize with a single word what separated these two champions on this night we’d say it was ‘speed’.  There wasn’t any visible thought process from either player during this amazing match, simply no time for that. To the exception of just a few rallies here and there, it was made of purely instinctive squash.

Having pulled out from the exceptionally high number of majors that preceded ToC due to a foot injury, Ramy had shown through earlier rounds that he was back, well rested and healthy. James isn’t the type to look for excuses, and surely no credit should be taken away from Ramy for any reason, he proved how good he was already, but one can wonder if the outcome of this match would have been different if both players had competed in the same number of events... We’re bound to find out sooner or later as they’ll meet again no doubt, let’s just hope that our cameras will be rolling to capture those gems.

10. S. DeLierre vs. Gaultier (Free with purchase of Best 8 DVDS)

This match Shawn played Vs Greg is reminiscent of their juniors’ days as friends and sparing partners, their thing then was to win points the unconventional way through outright winners or contortions. In their first PSA tour match since, they were back right where they left off, and seemingly oblivious to the importance of the moment.

Greg has far more experience on glass court stages so Shawn had to draw on his own strengths to make up for it and be competitive. Using his speed and racquet skills Shawn imposed his rhythm for good part of the match until Greg re-asserted himself with devastating lengths and control of the T. Certainly one for Shawn to build confidence on for a most promising future and exciting family archives.

1. W (3-4) - Vicky Botwright Vs Vanessa Atkinson

Vicky and Vanessa were both in unfamiliar territory playing one another on the event’s last night in NY; since their ¾ position match preceded both the women’s and the men’s finals, the bleachers were almost filled to capacity, an unusual circumstance for the match’s relative importance in the draw. Furthermore, it was only the second time they were playing using the men’s PAR point system as opposed to that of WISPA’s & the amateur’s game to 9 in which servers only can score. Considering this, and once the jitters were gone early in the match, the two players provided us one of the most closely contested matches in the women’s draw thus far.

All in all a good one for any amateur player men and women alike to watch and study since it is played at more human speeds than the men’s pro game.

2. W (Final) - Natalie Grainger Vs Shelly Kitchen

Having just written about Vicky and Vanessa that they play the game at more human speeds than the men do, the case is slightly different with Natalie and Shelly, at least on the striking end since they can both hit balls just about as hard as any men can, whether they are pros or not. Natalie is simply amazing in the front part of the court burring balls deep in the nicks almost at will so Shelly had to get her away from the T to establish herself and stay I the match, could she recover from an early deficit? Maybe in part because her partner Anthony Ricketts helped her figure out how she could do this as he coached her between games, or maybe because the balls she struck eventually found the back of the court, she never-the less fought back to tie the match, and the battle went on the distance to the crowd’s delight.

One great match to learn from 2 of the best in the world for all amateurs including young girls aspiring to reach the top levels, may it be at their clubs, country of the world.

David Palmer vs James Willstrop (PSA World Champion Vs World Junior Champion). Palmer started this incredible match in fine form and played rallies at blistering speed and with the accuracy of a neurosurgeon hence neutralizing his young opponent. Most balls he hit clung to walls as do nails to a magnet and there was little James could do to stop the onslaught - that is until something hard to put into words happened… Heir apparent to Jonathon Power on the creativity end of things, James at 6ft 4 inch. has additional height and reaches which he takes full advantage of at every opportunity. Halfway through this historical match, one to remember not only for its quality but also because it is one of the last ever played that used the PAR to 15 scoring system; James suddenly found his rhythm and groove. He then began mistreating the World Champion sending him in different directions; so many times in fact that smoke from the friction of his shoes to the court floor rose through Grand Central Terminal, joining the fuel mix of departing trains. JOHN WHITE vs THIERRY LINCOU John, the hardest ball striker of the modern era Vs one of the most the most athletic and creative player on the tour at the moment. It was a late night in New York and, along with the production crew, only a handful of spectators remained in the stands to witness the match that would eventually be voted the best of the tournament. John took a 2 game to love lead over Thierry by using the most incredible and daring array of shots ever witnessed in America. While midnight approached, everyone thought that the 3rd game was a simple technicality and would be over in a matter of minutes, everyone that is except Thierry… You will be inspired by both these players' incredible desire to win. 2. PETER NICOL vs ANTHONY RICKETTS Anthony is one of the most energetic up and coming players on the tour at the moment. How he manages to keep his playing intensity as high as he does from the first to the last points of every match he plays is mind boggling. He had pushed Nicol to the limit in their last few encounters on the tour, and this one was more of the same. Although Anthony was relentless in his attacks, a calm and composed Peter somehow found a way to neutralize most. Peter's defense and flick counter punches left Anthony shaking his head on more than one occasion, but he kept fighting, and fighting and fighting until the very end. Just as you could tell that Peter Nicol had what it took to reach the top when he played world # 2 Brett Martin in the *ToC 94 in NY's twin towers, watching Anthony play Peter today, you'll have no doubt in mind that he'll soon reach that same goal. 3. PETER NICOL vs DAVID PALMER David had beaten all of the world's top players during the 2002 season, he came to NY determine to start off the new season the way he finished the last, I.e. by winning the World Open Championship in Antwerp in a repeat performance of the *SSFinals 2002 Vs John White. Having two players who have no doubt in mind that they belong at the top is the prefect recipe for a great battle, this match will not disappoint you. Only the story that followed concerning David's emergency procedure shortly after this match will leave in admiration for this great champion. 4. JONATHON POWER vs THIERRY LINCOU Thierry had never won a single game against Jonathon in all of their encounters on tour to date. During an interview we did with him in Time Square at the start of the event, Thierry candidly admitted to us that he hadn't yet overcome the psychological barrier erected in his mind that stemmed from so many losses suffered to Jonathon. Just a few hours after making that statement though, Thierry broke down this barrier and stunned Jonathon, and as well the NY crowd, by winning his first game ever against him. Having won this event numerous time before, Jonathon was featured as the main player on the advertising posters that were plastered all around NY's Grand Central terminal. Was it the media pressures that became momentarily overwhelming for Jonathon, or was it that Thierry was in this magical place called the zone that most athletes dream of reaching at crucial times in their career? Despite that Jonathon was using his incredible arsenal of shots and more against his opponent during the match, Thierry somehow found an answer to all. See history unfold before your eyes on that special night. 5. PETER NICOL vs THIERRY LINCOU The stage was set, the world # 1 Vs world # 6 Thierry Lincou, this year's ToC giant killer. After knocking out world # 4 and # 2 from the event, Thierry was now ready to complete the hat trick. All seats were sold out, rows upon rows of spectator gathered beyond the front wall to witness the spectacle, and what a spectacle it was. Few gave Thierry any chance to pull another upset win against the most solid and consistent performer on tour these last few years. Peter took an early lead in the match, but Thierry leveled all in the second in a brilliant display of athleticism and mental poise. All started to believe that the impossible may happen again… Womens' Matches 1. CAROL OWENS vs NATALIE POHRER The best women in the world were competing alongside the men for the first time in this year's ToC. Having announced her retirement from the Women's tour, Sarah FitzGerald had left her # 1 spot vacant shortly before this event. While Carol was now technically world # 1 in the rankings, she was followed closely by Natalie at #2. The final match of the women's flight was the best the NY crowd could have hoped for. From the start of the match, Natalie dictated the rallies using powerful strikes keeping Carol off balance and deep into the four corners of the court. Natalie, who is now based in the US, took a two game lead in the match, she was playing flawless squash, but Carol wasn't done yet... She may not be as powerful as Natalie but she surely makes up for it in more than one way with speed, amazing drops and fighting spirit. While club players around the world can hardly model their game after that of the men's 'super fast' professional game, they can surely do so after the 'more human' women's game. This match is must to watch and study from not only by club players, but also by juniors of both gender as well.
