COACHING

Steps to Certification

The Squash Ontario Coaching Certification Program is currently undergoing a series of major changes.  We are in the transition to CBET (Competency-Based Education and Training).  This is an exciting time for the Coaching program; however, it leads to many questions about the new certification process and the status of those already certified.  For an explanation of CBET and its structure, please visit the Coaching Association of Canada website, Coaches Association of Ontario website or Squash Canada website.  These websites along with Squash Ontario's coaching pages will be a tremendous resource for you when looking for information on the NEW NCCP program and how you become a Certified Coach.

Squash Canada has implemented the new sport specific courses (replaces the old Technical Courses) in the CBET program.  The Coaching Foundations Course has replaced the Level 1 Technical Clinic and the Intermediate Course has replaced the Level 2 Technical Clinic; meanwhile, Squash Canada will be pilotting the new Provincial Coaching Course in September 2009 (replaces Level 3 Technical).

Upon completion of any non-sport specific clinic or certification component (Multi Sport modules, Ethics Exam, CPR/First Aid), you must send in proof of completion via fax, mail or scan/email.  Squash Ontario must be able to verify all components are completed before allowing any coach to move to the next certification component/context.

Due to the changes in the Coaching Certification Program - Squash Ontario will verify all registrations for coaches registering for clinics that have prerequisites.  We ask that all coaches review their current level of certification to ensure everything is up-to-date and accurate.  In some cases where discrepancies are found, proof of completion may be required before the coach will be allowed to continue on with registration.

NOTE:
Squash Ontario encourages all facilities owners and managers to ensure their squash professional or programmer has attained at least Level 1 or "Squash Instructor" certification.

MULTI-SPORT CLINICS

Periodically, Squash Ontario will play host to Multi Sport clinics/modules to assist squash coaches in completing this required component (please watch the Coaching Clinic Schedule for these clinics).  Please keep in mind, Multi-Sport clinics/modules are under the umbrella of the Coaches Association of Ontario (CAO) and they have clinics offered on a variety of dates/locations across the province.  Therefore, if we are not hosting a clinic that is tailored to squash coaches with squash situations, you must access Multi Sport clinics/modules thorugh the CAO.  For more information on the CAO, please visit their website or to view upcoming Multi Sport clinics/modules, please review their NCCP Course Calendar.  Questions regarding Home Study programs, please call 416-426-7427.

FOREIGN COACHING EQUIVALENCY

A policy concerning accreditation of foreign certified coaches has been adopted by Squash Canada.  For further information on requirements, please contact Squash Canada by phone at (613) 731-7385.  You will be required to speak to the Technical Director regarding potential equivalencies.

Certification Contexts

A coach used to have to go through a Level system to attain certification (Level 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) similar to a ladder system; now a coach can choose from an Instructional stream with various contexts, depending on the level of competition they wish to instruct.  Squash Canada's coaching program presently is in the middle of a transitional period from the old system to the new system.  Described below are the contexts developed by Squash Canada and available in Ontario with the exisiting old NCCP process  (Level 4, 5) still available as well.

A full description of each context and the requirements are as follows:
